Alejandro Tiana Ferrer (Madrid, 1951), obtained a Bachelor Degree and a Ph.D. in Pedagogy (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, “Facultad de Filosofía y Letras”) at Complutense University of Madrid.

He is Professor at National University of Distance Education (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, UNED), where currently he is also the Rector.

He held many important positions within the UNED, as well as different engagements within the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. For instance, he served as the General Secretary of Education (2004-2008). Furthermore, he was Director of the National Institute for Education Evaluation and Quality (1994-1996), as well as Director of the Centre for Educational Research and Documentation (1989-1994).

Between 2008 and 2012, he occupied the position of Director of the Center for Advanced Studies at the Ibero-American States Organization for Education, Science and Culture (OEI).

He authored or co-authored 23 books and more than 200 articles or chapters of books about different issues related to his expertise.
